Remove keys on Mac PowerBook G4?
I’ve had my Mac PowerBook G4 for almost 3 years and, because I’m an art student who frequently draws with charcoal near her computer (Oops!), my keyboard has become quite black and icky. I have ordered a silicone keyboard cover, and before it comes in I would like to give the keyboard a thorough cleaning — the surfaces and under the keys. Has anyone ever removed their PowerBook keys successfully? How did you do it? Did anything break? Any tips?
If you don’t want to remove the keyboard, you want to remove the keys, I’d recommend against it. The keys do just pop out but they are difficult to get back in. I’d suggest getting some “Dust-Off or something similar and blow all the dust off and under the keys. Then get a cotton cloth, like a face towel, and moisten a section (not wet, just damp) with a solution of water & any quality cleaner, and wipe one key off at a time (computer off). Use a Q-tip for the hard to reach spaces. Just don’t get any cleaning solution dripping into the keyboard, you just want a damp towel. Those premoistened towelettes work fine also. I had to clean many Mac keyboards that my students would grub up in my art room.
