Portfolio Black

I am a graphic designer with no experience in the field yet and I need to know how to organize a portfolio?
I have around 40 pieces of designs made in college and now I would like to make a professional looking portfolio with them, but I am not sure what the best to do it is. They are on 16 x 19 black boards and considering how big and heavy they are, I do not see myself carrying that unhandy stuff around offices to be shown to employers. Someone told me once to take pictures of them and print them letter format which is a good idea, the problem is that I do not think using a common digital camera would make professional pieces. I am thinking about scanning them and see what comes up. I am open to all kind of suggestion and I appreciate your collaboration in advance.
Narrow it down to a dozen pieces or so. No art director is going spend a lot of time looking at 40 pieces of anything.
Make sure that what you include are the best of the best, showing off as much techincal skill as artistic talent.
For the current crop of art directors, I would advise you to go ahead and scan your pieces and have some good quality prints made in a smaller, easier to manage size. I still have my old leather, 16 x 20 portfolio case and I still shake my head when I recall the awkward scene of some director making an unsuccessful attempt at clearing his or her desk to try to make room for this outsized monstrosity. These are busy people with busy desks.
Having some 8 x 10 prints mounted and nicely displayed in a smaller case displays your talent and shows your consideration of the director’s needs. Also, have some CD s burned with these and the rest of your portfolio images. You can leave a copy of the CD so you won’t have to risk leaving the portfolio case.
If the art director likes your work enough to want to see the originals, he will be glad to make a follow up appointment to see it.
